You may find during your stay in one of our condos or townhomes at Wedgewood Lodge that it sometimes gets a bit crowded in Breckenridge during high season. You can get away from it all by taking a short drive south on Highway 9, which takes you over the Continental Divide at Hoosier Pass into Park County. Although Park County is a less-travelled pocket of Colorado than Summit County, you’ll find it no less awe-inspiring!

When you head south from Breckenridge on Highway 9, the first town you will enter is the Town of Blue River. Here you can find the trailhead to beautiful Mohawk Lakes.

As you drive south, you will see Quandary Peak. This is probably the most popular 14er in Colorado because it’s so easily accessible. It can get quite crowded, especially on the weekends, so plan accordingly.

Moving on south, you will come to the top of Hoosier Pass. There’s wonderful hiking to be had on the east & west side of the parking lot with breathtaking vistas at every turn!

From there, looking south, you will get your first amazing views of Park County

Descending Hoosier on the south side from the summit, you can get a glimpse of the beautiful Montgomery Reservoir to your right. It is definitely worth a stop to take in the gorgeous views, check out Magnolia Mill or go even further and hike up to Wheeler Lake. You can also 4×4, but it is not for the faint of heart and only recommended if you are experienced and have the right all terrain vehicle.

Next stop: Alma! At 10,578 feet of elevation, this is the highest incorporated town in the US. There you can find the trailhead to hike the 14ers: Lincoln, Cameron, Democrat & Bross all in one day!

Let’s continue on to the Town of Fairplay. We bet that by now you have worked up an appetite. We suggest you try Salado or Millonzi’s – either one will satisfy your hunger! If you’re thirsty, stop at South Park Brewing or the Snitching Lady Distillery.

We highly recommend a tour of South Park City, where you will be treated to a plethora of history in the setting of a true mining town in the 1800’s. Front Street also features a number of shops worth a peek!

You can drive back to Breckenridge via Highway 9 or via the incredibly scenic Boreas Pass.
